Remembering Puerto Rican Pioneer Amalia Betanzos

Amalia Betanzos was the CEO of Wildcat Service Corporation. It operates one of the most successful alternative high schools in the country, providing vocational training for ex-offenders, the chronically unemployed, public assistance recipients, and high school dropouts.

Since founding Wildcat Academy (later renamed the John V. Lindsay Academy) in 1992, Ms. Betanzos had transformed it into a multimillion-dollar nonprofit. She developed a Private Industry Partnership with Solomon Smith Barney to train welfare participants, and she served as chairwoman of the National Puerto Rican Coalition.
